Michigan is not an NCCI state, and January 1 is still the right date. CAOM, acting as the statutory Data Collection Agency, issues Michigan's statewide average advisory pure premiums "effective January 1 — new and renewal business only" each year, and its circular letters are titled by that date year after year. The Data Collection Agency Board of Governors approves the indication each July at the Department of Insurance and Financial Services in Lansing; the 2025 meeting was held on July 30, 2025.
Michigan has its own independent rating bureau, the Compensation Advisory Organization of Michigan (CAOM). The state has a competitive workers' comp market with rates above the national average due to its manufacturing base.

How to find a Michigan workers' comp class code from a job description
There is no Michigan workers' comp class code for a job title. Michigan does not take NCCI's classification decisions — the CAOM is the rating organization that classifies Michigan employers, and what gets classified is the employer's business — not the separate employments, occupations or operations inside it. "Machinist", "CNC operator", "general construction labor" and "data entry" are therefore work that sits inside whichever classification describes the business, not values you can look up on their own.
CAOM publishes Michigan's classifications in the Classifications Manual (the undated edition CAOM publishes on its Manuals page, with an Athletic Classification Code Addendum effective January 1, 2020). To confirm the classification for a specific business, use CAOM Class Code Lookup — that is the filed authority for Michigan, and a code quoted from another state's manual is not.
Michigan splits the two documents most states combine. The Classifications Manual is the one that carries the classifications; the Basic Manual CAOM publishes beside it (effective April 1, 2025) governs the Michigan Workers' Compensation Placement Facility, which is the assigned-risk market. Asking for "the Michigan Basic Manual" therefore gets the residual-market rulebook rather than the classification list.
