NCCI Class Code 8058 — officially phrased "Building Material Dealer — New Materials Only — Store Employees" — is the workers' compensation classification for the in-store retail staff of building material dealers, home improvement centers, and lumberyards that sell new construction supplies to the public. It is a store-only code: it covers cashiers, sales and service-counter personnel, paint and special-order counter staff, and, in dealers where the store is physically separated from the yard, in-store shelf-stocking. The exposure is light-retail handling — ringing up sales, advising customers, and moving boxed or bagged goods on the sales floor — which is why 8058 sits in hazard group D, well below the construction codes whose materials it sells.
The defining feature of 8058 is that it is half of a two-code pair. Store employees rate to 8058, while the yard, warehouse, and delivery-driver operations of the same dealer rate to the companion NCCI code 8232 Building Material Yard & Drivers. A building material dealer cannot use 8058 in isolation — the heavier yard, lumber-handling, forklift, and driving exposures must be reported separately under 8232. What's Included Under Class Code 8058
8058 contemplates the store side of a new-materials building supply operation. In an ordinary dealer or lumberyard where the showroom or store is physically separated from the warehouse and yard, the store payroll includes cashiers, counter and sales staff, paint and special-order desks, and shelf-stocking inside the store. In a large warehouse-format home-improvement center — Home Depot and Lowe's are the standard examples — the store does not stand apart from the inventory, so 8058 is applied more narrowly to cashiers, service-counter personnel, and paint or special-order counter personnel, with the floor, racking, lumber, and yard staff falling to 8232 instead.
The "New Materials Only" qualifier is part of the classification, not a footnote. 8058 anticipates a dealer selling new lumber, hardware, and building materials. Operations built around used, salvaged, or secondhand building materials are a different exposure and are not contemplated by 8058. As with every class, the code is assigned from the operations actually performed during the policy year, and the yard and driver payroll that belongs in 8232 must be kept on its own code rather than swept into the lower-rated store classification.
When the Work Is NOT Coded 8058
The most common error is reporting an entire building material dealer under 8058 to capture its lower store rate. Yard workers, warehouse personnel, lumber handlers, and delivery drivers belong to companion code 8232, and an auditor who finds yard or driving payroll reported as store payroll will reclassify it. 8058 is store employees only.
8058 is also distinct from the general retail and wholesale codes. A specialty operation that is genuinely a hardware store rates to hardware store wholesale or retail 8010; a lumber-only yard's store staff may instead fall under lumber dealer 8061; a business selling to other businesses rather than the public is wholesale and rates to wholesale store NOC 8018; and a store that does not fit any specialty retail code defaults to retail store NOC 8017. Independent-bureau states matter here too — California (WCIRB), Pennsylvania (PCRB), Delaware (DCRB), New Jersey (NJCRIB), Michigan (CAOM), and North Carolina (NCRB) maintain their own classification systems and may assign building-material store staff to a different code number or store/yard split than NCCI's 8058, so a dealer in those states should confirm classification with the state bureau rather than relying on the national number.
