A defining feature of 8293 is that the firm has no equity in the goods it handles — it moves and stores other people's furniture rather than selling its own inventory. 8293 contemplates a single moving-and-storage exposure end to end. On the moving side it includes the drivers and the packing or handling of household or office goods performed away from the insured's own premises — the packers dispatched to the customer's location, the loaders and helpers (who are not drivers), and the crew that unloads and sets the furniture in place at the destination. On the storage side it includes warehouse employees who move or repack stored items, the maintenance of the warehouse and its equipment, and the receipt, safekeeping, and subsequent release of furniture from storage. Local household-goods movers, office-furniture movers, and furniture-storage warehouses serving individual customers are the prototypical 8293 risks.
The classification assumes the insured holds no equity in the furniture — it is custodial moving and storage, not retail. Because the heavy lifting, carrying on stairs and through doorways, and over-the-road driving all live in one code, the rate is built around lifting strains, slips and falls, and vehicle exposure. As with every class, 8293 is assigned from the operations actually performed during the policy year, so a mover's field crew, driver, and warehouse payroll all report here rather than being split toward a lighter code.
When the Work Is NOT Coded 8293
The most common boundary is general warehousing. 8293 is specifically furniture moving and storage for individual customers; a warehouse storing general merchandise for other businesses is the not-otherwise-classified storage code (NCCI 8292, Storage Warehouse NOC) instead, and the storage of new, unsold furniture for a manufacturer or dealer is a manufacturer/dealer warehousing exposure rather than the customer-furniture code 8293. If an operation both moves household goods and warehouses general freight for businesses, the two exposures can carry different classifications.
8293 is also distinct from general trucking. A for-hire carrier hauling general merchandise or freight under contract is 7219 Trucking NOC — All Employees & Drivers, not 8293 — the household-goods mover stays in 8293 even on longer hauls because the governing operation is furniture moving and storage, while a plain freight carrier is trucking. Within a moving company, the standard-exception staff are separated where the state bureau allows it: office dispatchers, schedulers, and billing clerks are 8810 Clerical Office Employees and outside estimators or sales reps who travel to quote moves are 8742 Outside Sales Personnel. Independent-bureau states — California (WCIRB), Pennsylvania (PCRB), Delaware (DCRB), New Jersey (NJCRIB), Michigan (CAOM), and North Carolina (NCRB) — maintain their own classification systems and may assign movers a different code number or moving/storage split than NCCI's 8293, so an operator in those states should confirm classification with the state bureau rather than relying on the national number.
